Default What makes a phoenomenal Pedigree?

What makes a phoenomenal pedigree? Is it lots of titles on parents and ancestors? Is it good hips and elbows on ancestors? Or is it a combination of those two and more?

Is this what you would call a phoenomenal pedigree:

Don't mean to derail your thread, but I thought this was different. I've never seen this on a breeders site before. (maybe I just haven't been paying attention?)

I think what makes a phenomenal pedigree has more to do with the actual dogs than titles or hip scores.

Agree. but I also think it's important to know the hip scores just to prevent that problem in future genarations. we don't want a dog with an pheonomenal pedigree and also HD.

Absolutely. I'm just saying you can have a pedigree with every dog having OFA Excellent hips and SchH3 and still end up with not-so-good dogs. The more I learn, the more I realize that breeding is an art where you have to actually know the dogs you're breeding, not just a science of breeding titled dog A to titled dog B.

Exactly!!! You must know what you are breeding for -- what type of dog you want to produce. Then you have to know what your bitch has to offer and what needs improvement. You then need to know what stud dog can give you that improvement. But you also need to know how the bloodlines will work together -- too much of something is just as bad as too little. If you are skilled, and lucky, you will reach your goals in breeding. Sometimes we do -- sometimes we don't.

Indeed!!! I always make sure I take my pedigrees out and work them in the real world!

But as others have said, what makes a great pedigree is knowing about the individual dogs and what they have produced in the past, to give one an idea of what they will be producing next.

I've never seen statistics broken down like that either - pretty cool, nice to see breeders being open with what they produce. The only other thing that I have seen that is similar is this list of titles on my breeder's site:

(Schutzhund Titles, Tracking Titles, Obedience Titles, Rally Titles, Agility Titles, Protection Titles, SDA Titles )

That would be out of about roughly 50 dogs - the last three litters still being too young for OFA's or titles. And if you go the "past litters" page, and click on the link for each breeding's litter pictures, each dog is listed with titles and OFA results (if they have them - some owners do not OFA their dogs).

I think it is cool that a breeder keeps in touch with all the owners of the pups they have produced so that they know how their breeding program is working out.

Oh see, I never noticed that on Wildhaus's site either, very cool.

Sure makes it easier to see what a line has been up to even if the information isn't complete. (Because not all pet owners title, do OFA's etc.)
