Since I am looking next year and I really want another dog similar to mine for cadaver dog......I want to ask two questions......is he an anomaly or really very typical of his lines...if this is typical I want more of the same.....if not what lines ARE like this?
Please forgive my terminology - I am trying but all I want to do is cadaver work and basic obedience so I have only picked up schutzhund style jargon on boards.....I now have several years of SAR and HR dog experience though and have been on about 70 legitimate searches..... And since some here know Czech and DDR quite well. Grim van der Woude - German shepherd dog Hunt Drive - Excellent at present searches actively and focused approx 2 hours without a break (under good weather conditions) and does not get distracted. Will go back to work after a break. Prey Drive - I think I would say moderate. Dog is ball crazy and tug crazy but does not really care about chasing critters - he notices them then gets back to work (deer have jumped right in front of him with nothing more than a quick startle)-He is actually a bit stupid about chasing his ball and does not think (IOW my West German female will go AROUND obstacles that he will plow through) Defense - I honestly don't know. I was told he was worked in defense before I got him but I know nothing of these things - he is defintiely NOT overly reactive. (E.g., snarky dogs, strange people....now he will note people as we walk, particularly men....and keep his eye on them but no hackles or growling though he does change to a more alert status...normally he is very goofy and silly but then switches this way)-things don't phase him (though he does howl with sirens) Temperament-Aloof with all but me and family. Very bonded to me. Pleasant with folks and other dogs-accepts petting and loves kids. Basically dog neutral. Off Switch- Yes. He settles nicely in the house or his crate. He does get excited when he visually sees other dogs doing things like runaways. Civil-NO I don't think so. I can hand him off to anybody, he goes willingly is not suspicious and that is important because often we have to be transported to search scenes in all kind of crazy ways. For example, when I refused to try to carry him on my lap on an ATV on the paved road, he rode in the coroners SUV with her while I rode on the ATV. Hardness - physically he seems to take anything. Was not phased when he knocked out his teeth or falls into pits etc. He is very sensitive to a harsh word from me though (he does recover quickly) and has never needed so much as a pinch collar. Structure-Solid (the picture is from when he was 2, and in summer after coat blowing) he is more muscular now. Oh the end of the tail is gone from an accident.
