Due to ignorance I did not introduce my dog to brushing late

She initially didn't like it and a friend fixed it for me. By that stage it was well matted...It's taking me absolutely ages to do this ..I could fill more than two black bags with all the hair!

Help!

Don't feel bad! I have a long haired GSD. I know better, and I'm always finding knots that I've missed! He's just become used to me flipping him around to achieve better access to them! LOL!

Yeas, long-hair GSD always have to be groomed. I always check Lisl for anything she might have picked up in her fur, especially around and along the sides of her ears.

Cockleburs, weed seeds, etc. They get in there and they are a bugger to get out later if you miss them.

For the record, mine is short haired :)

What are you using? I have a metal comb that I really like on the thick undercoat, especially around the neck area.

Metal rake and a slicker brush.

I didn't know short-haired gsds had matting problems and that too this bad. I have a short haired gsd and I never get to groom her properly because she simply refuses to let me. I only get to comb her top and sides a little sometimes and I know for a fact that had she been a long-coat her fur would have been a mess by now. How old is she by the way?

Lisl? 22 months yesterday.

My best advise is "cornstarch" worked in like you were trying to get powder to the skin. Then a rake will pull out that undercoat much more easily and quickly.
