Default When to neuter when one testicle doesn't drop?

My guy is almost 8 months old and he has one undescended testicle. What kind of issues might I face if I wait a while longer to have him neutered. I've been waiting because he's been so slow to grow, was planning to have it done around 18 months or later but is that safe? What are the arguments for doing it now or waiting... Thanks in advance!

My dog has a retained testicle also. I was told between 12 to 18 months. We are doing the OFA xrays at the same time. so he'll only need to be put under once. My dog will be just over a year old.

They say after 2 years the odds of cancer increase in the retained testicle.

Thank you for the response! That's what I was concerned about, is when the cancer risk starts. I'm attempting to do X-rays next week without anesthesia but if we're unsuccessful I'll put it off until he gets neutered.

Thanks again!

Do it when you are ready. 18 months to 2 years will be fine.

I wanted to wait until my Dal was 24 months old but my Vet said I should neuter him at 18 months.

My regular vet said 12 months, the breeders vet said 12 months, the reproduction specialist vet I took him to said I could wait as long as 18 months, but after that the chances for cancer increase especially after 2 years. She also said we could remove the retained testicle and just give him a vasectomy, but we are going to neuter.

My Orick (in my avatar) was my rescue boy at 2yrs, with an undescended testicle. He was just over two when I had him neutered, and he is fine. He does still life his leg to pee, although half the time he hits his front foot/leg, lol.
