Default Questions about puppy in heat

I have a 9 month old girl named Ava she just started going into season this morning. I have solved how to take care of the mess but do I keep the diaper on her at night while she is in the kennel or just take it off and put it on while she is out? Also we were waiting to get her spayed until after her first season. How soon after is it safe to get her spayed. I know our vet was really trying to push us to do it right away before. Any other suggestions would be wonderful!!

Thank you,
Jasmine

In my experience, about 3-6 weeks post estrus works.
I would watch the diaper and not leave it obn her unattended.

I would keep her crated and diaper off, but put a towel or two in the crate to keep the mess under control.
Diaper at all other times and outside ONLY when supervised, even if in a fenced yard.
Boys can smell females in heat for miles.

I have had success for the past 18 years with Seasonals - a dog diaper garment.

www.seasonals.com

Their gallery tab has photos and I have never had one of these come off of fall off. If the dog tries to chew it, I just pin where the velcro is and I have not had any dogs that were more persistent than velcro and a large diaper pin (the old fashioned big ones).

We left Nita's diaper on overnight when she was having her heaviest flow. She was good about not trying to take it off and just left it alone. She didn't enjoy having it put on though, she always dipped her head and let us know she was just giving in to us being so mean to her by making her wear it.

We are also getting her spayed before her next heat. Our daughter thought she wanted to show her in conformation, but has changed her mind and is going to do Rally and Obedience instead
