We purchased a policy last year from Petplan for our 7 year old GSD.
Since we adopted Joey as an adult dog, we were concerned about the health issues that come with older dogs. Petplan covers hereditary and congenital conditions. They have three levels of coverage and different deductibles, so you can tailor the premiums. Joey was recently neutered and had a growth removed from his paw. We've submitted claims for these and the related testings. Will see what we get back from Petplan.

I just went through this. I shopped for about two-three weeks. Google on the internet and you'll find lots of information. Look for plans that cover congenital and hereditary illnesses, lifetime coverage for chronic illnesses, and annual deductible choices. Some have annual reimbursement limits (not too bad). Look out for the ones with "schedule" plans because they won't cover a lot of what will need to be done. They typically won't cover any wellness for the pet (vaccines, dental hygiene, flea/tick control, etc); and none of them will cover pre-existing conditions, so you want to get the insurance as soon as you get your puppy (something I wish I could go back and change). You really have to search for what suits you best. These are the ones that liked, in order of preference:
Healthy Paws (this is the one I went with) PetPlan Trupanion ASPCA I didn't really care for any of the other ones. Hope that helps. Good luck!

I agree it is best to get it when he's a puppy. I did go with VPI for Sting. By that time he was 5 yrs old but did get a wellness deduction. They do offer quite a few choices on deductibles and so on and also a wellness coverage for the vaccines, checkup, etc. They do pay up fast and the forms are easy to fill out and can be emailed. I did select a high deductible and was surprised that depending on your state, for me here in South Dakota, I had 6 years to submit claims.
