Im getting my puppy spayed in about a week. And I know she can't really do to much exercise for like a week but was wondering if there was anything specific I should know prior to getting it done. Thank you in advance

Here's somethings we've experienced: Bring a towel or old blanket with you to pick her up. Some dogs will throw up on their way home. Zira did, and if it wasn't for that blanket, it would have been ALL over my backseat! Make sure they go potty before going into the vets... to minimize the chance of them going on themselves. Zira had an accident, I don't think she fully went in the morning before since she's not used to waking up that early. Even though she was fasted like they said (no food/water after 10pm), it turned out to be a nasty mess. E-Collar is a good idea. We have one for Z and I can sleep in peace knowing I wont wake up to any issues with her incision. She hates it, but deals with it just fine now. Also, don't mess with the incision. If you HAVE to clean something off it... a warm moist towel and dab it on it... no rubbing and no alcohol or peroxide... and no ointments, unless of course the vet gives one to you. Don't do this often though, just if needed. I am sure you were probably already told all of this... but, being our first time getting a dog spayed, we've certainly learned a lot and I figured I'd share just in case! Good luck to you and your pup! I wish you both the best and a nice fast recovery with no complications! (also.. thank you for spaying your dog!)

Thank you so much for the advice. We have to bring my dog Tess in next Thursday for pre op and than the following tuesday for the surgery. She can't eat anything from 7pm the night before and no water after 7am. Have to drop her off at like 8 and can't pick her up till the next day. Certainly going to invest in a e coller better safe than sorry. Just not looking forward to the 7-10 days of no playing but suppose its something that has to get done. Thanks again.

And I agree.... the 10 (+/-) day wait is not very fun. But, it's has to be done. It'll all be over before you know it! I mean.. we're already on day 3! It's gone by pretty fast so far, and the difficult part is already almost over!

I just had my dog spayed on the 13th. She had to go back in to get stitches removed a few days ago.
Your dog will be pretty out of it when you pick her up and when she gets home. This is normal. Just give her somewhere comfy and quiet to hang out at. If you do offer her food, give her some chicken broth or rice or boiled chicken. Something very simple for her stomach. She probably won't eat though. My dog didn't actually eat until about day 3 post op. The first day she would turn away from food, or just pick it up and spit it out. Keep that cone on! Don't even risk it. No ointment for dissolving sutures, so i've heard. Relish the few days of her groggines, lol. My pup felt better in about 24hrs...and by the 2nd and 3rd day, I was wishing for it back! She was all over the place. My vet told me to give her Benedryl to chill her out, but it didn't work much. Make sure she doesn't run or jump. Go on slow walks with her to drain her energy. The incision will look a little swollen and puffy, but shouldn't: leak anything, have anything come out of it, bleed, etc. No getting the site wet! Thank you for getting your dog spayed, and I hope she recovers well! Hang in there
