Default Paw question

Winter is coming and I was wondering if there is anything special I should be doing to protect my pups paws (he is 6 months old) from the ice/ice melt? Should he be wearing boots? Does he need lotion? Should I be putting lotion on the paws anyway even without the winter?

i wouldn't put lotion on my dogs paws. i want his pads to be tough
so he can take the grind of being outside. there's boots for dogs.

At the very least I would wash off his paws whenever he comes inside from a walk. Those salts and chemical melters can be bad for the skin/pads and harmful if ingested (licked off the paws). There are different options for protection-- from creams, sprays and wax to various types of boots.

I just have my dog run around the back yard when we come in from a walk to remove any ice melt. This will be her 3rd winter... so far so good.
I think it's a good question to ask, though, and I will pay more attention to it.

PaddyD, I do the same thing. I also guide her to the fresh snow on the side as well every once in a while.
