Default Frequency of Flea Prevention after Dog Swims/Gets Wet

I was wondering what you all do in terms of re-applying flea prevention after your dog swims, plays in the water, or gets bathed. I find I don't need to bathe Boss much, however when we stayed at the beach for a week and he was routinely in the surf he had a bad outbreak of hotspots on his rump. The vet told me that the flea prevention I had applied (First Shield Trio) had washed away when he went swimming and that in that case I should have applied more. Well, I don't want to over do it on the chemicals but I also don't want him to suffer like he did with that hot spot. Apparently he's allergic to flea saliva and the vet told me that's fairly common to the breed. So I'm wondering, especially for any of you who have GSDs with the same allergy, do you wait until they begin to scratch to reapply if it's before the month is over or do you reapply after they've gotten really soaked regardless of symptoms?

Many flea treatments claim to remain effective after swimming, so I usually wait until the month is up. Check the packaging or website - if yours washes off that easily you might want to switch to a different product.
