New Foster wont eat raw
So I have a new foster to adopt(Non GSD) , that we got yesterday. I decided to start him off on raw as we are almost positive we are keeping him and we didnt know what food he was on before. but he wouldnt eat it. Just stared at it. Licked it a couple times. I got him to take a bite but he would bite gently and just let it fall out of his mouth. I have NEVER seen a dog not go nuts for raw. He does have a low food drive though. So I ended up just giving a bowl of kibble. Is there anything I can do to encourage him to eat raw? Any tips/tricks for picky eaters?
Thanks! |
What about a lightly scrambled egg (in butter - not margarine), try i raw first and if won't eat it then scramble or some coconut oil, sardines. He is probably hooked on the sugar and rendered fats in kibble.
and of course tripe - good and stinky b/c dogs eat with their nose |
New Foster wont eat raw
I second gator in adding tripe, when my boy is being picky that's what he gets and he goes crazy for it.

Gatorbytes has some good suggestion. Hunger also often works. Don't forget, though, that your foster has probably been through a lot and he may just need time to adjust before you make a lot of changes.

What "raw" were you feeding? Some dogs won't eat slimy chicken, some hate the smell of liver, etc.
If there is a kibble he likes, try mixing in some small ground beef chunks with his kibble, so he can't separate them out, and gradually reduce the proportion of kibble to beef, and gradually mix in other raw. Watch out for allergic reactions and back up if you see any. |
I was feeding him a 1/4 of a chicken. I will try mixing some beef in with kibble.
Thank you for the ideas! We are doing the two week shut down with him, so definitely moving slow. =) |

I would offer him the raw food, give him a few minutes to start eating and then, if he doesn't start eating just take the food away. He gets nothing until the next scheduled feeding. Unless he was starved, missing a few meals isn't going to hurt him. |
Duke was like this first time, I gave him a chicken wing out of a packet I was going to cook. He just did not get it, no interest at all, I ended up cutting it up and mixing it in with his normal kibble & topper dinner....he eat everything else and managed to pick out all the chicken wing pieces and left them in a heap.
Since then I realized he likes more gory bits, offal and tripe etc, tried him on tripe he loved it, then heart and liver then after a few weeks tried and chicken wing again and he went mad for it. |
