Hi...I thought I saw something about raw food should be "fit for human consumption (when cooked)". I buy pre-mix blends from Small Batch (smallbatch pets). I think it says right on the package - not fit for human consumption. Does that really mean it's not ideal for the dog? Walter is 4 months old today and loves his Small Batch blends. Could one of this board's experienced members mind looking at the smalbatch website and let me know what you think?
Thanks very much! |

I feel that the labeling 'not for human consumption' is just a way to protect the business from stupid people who may try to eat it... though they may not pass FDA type requirements. I wouldn't pass on a dog food company that puts that warning on their packaging.
That said, The main reason I feed raw is so that I can control what I am actually feeding to my greatest extent. And a pre-made with many ingredients isn't something that fits that criteria. |

True - but I don't think feeding pre-mixed blends from good sources means you necessarily are doing something wrong. They are supposed to be balanced in their ingredients. Some would think perhaps more in balance than, say, someone not doing their homework with proper balancing on their own. That's why a lot of folks start out like we are doing with a blended pre-mix raw and slowly start adding our own selectively purchased raw as we learn the best plan and sources. |

Many people will start with raw because of allergies or just to have control over not feeding so many ingredients. A pre-made with additives gives them little control, and not enough information on what their dog may be sensitive to.
If you change because you just want to feed raw, then a pre-made can be very convenient though pretty pricey. The link you posted looks fine to feed in that case. |

I'm guessing the main reason why it says "Not fit for human consumption" is because of the ground bone in it.
I would try their blends (with veggies) but not their batches (because of all the extra stuff).
