Any suggestions on what to do when traveling with my dog when he is on a raw diet? I travel quite a bit and Titan is already an extremely picky eater. I haven't switched to a raw diet yet but assuming when I do he is great with it, what should I do when we road trip. I know for a fact that he wouldn't switch back to kibble for the trip.. for future references anyone have any ideas?

I went away for 3 days and packed meal portions in ziplock baggies/froze them, kept in a dedicated cooler. Tossed the baggies after use, so I didn't have to deal with container clean up.
If you do run out of food, a chicken leg 1/4(which IMO is a perfect balance of mm, om, rmb for a GSD) from the grocer is much easier to access than a certain high end kibble that is only available at select pet stores. |

Grocery stores are your friend! A chicken quarter as was mentioned, ground beef, or whatever meaty bones are things you can find along the way. That way you don't have to fill up a cooler with a weeks' worth of raw meat and have it taking up space in the car.

Unless you are camping in the wilderness, chances are there's a basic grocery store within a 30 mile radius of where you are.
![]() The raw diet does not have to be balanced every day - it's balance over time. For example, I ran out of defrosted RMBs tonight so my gang had muscle meat again. They usually get MM in the morning and RMBs at night. It's not going to harm them to get ground beef two meals in a row. When we moved into our house my gang had chicken for every meal for several weeks in a row. It never bothered them.

I usually take stuff frozen in a cooler filled with ice and it thaws over time. For the first couple of meals I often have to pull out that meal for some thawing. I have traveled for up to 6 days this way.

The cooler works great, frozen on the bottom and semi defrosted on top
If you are like me and measure meals, I pack individual meals in quart size bags. Dump the bag out into the bowl and you are done. A bit more prep work on the front end but helpful when someone else is watching your dog or when you are travelling.

Yes, that was going to be my next order of business, I am in the military and due to my job, sometimes leave for a few days to even a few months.. I guess at that point I would just have to prepackage my meals for him or something.

Honest Kitchen, I hear, is fantastic. It's dehydrated, which is a gently way to preserve food and keep nutrients intact. Lightweight and easy to carry without risk of spoiling. You add water to reconstitute it.
There's a good demo for it on the leerburg site: Leerburg | Honest Kitchen Dehydrated Dog Food |
