Just today I came across this article, and of course it scared me. It's not like I eat a lot of chicken anyway, we eat tons of non-meat meals and of course chicken, beef and fish but like once or twice a week each.
What worries me is that chicken is the "base" of my dogs diet, especially for the RMBs, and they do get chicken daily, even if I give them more beef for example. I don't really have access to a big variety of proteins, the ones I can usually get are chicken, beef and turkey. Should I worry? Or should I just give stop giving them chicken liver? The chicken I buy does say in the package they don't use hormones and the like, but still... what if they do use this drug? I apologize cause I know I've been asking similar paranoid questions a lot. I'm sorry if I sound panicky but I've been a nervous wreck about my dogs ever since I lost my puppy. Most of the time I'm worrying I'm doing something wrong and harming them instead of making them healthier. I do have nervous breakdowns when something like this happens and then I think of going back to kibble or feeding kibble/raw. ![]() Any thoughts? I'd really appreciate them. |

And the most id do is feed Calf or Beef liver instead. Maybe Chicken Gibblets.... heart, kidneys, etc...

Thanks so much, MrsWoodcock!
Yeah, they seem to be fine, I just worry if it might harm then in the long run or something. But I guess I'll do that and not give them chicken liver just to be on the safe side. |

That's gross.
Personally - I wouldn't stop feeding the liver but I'd definitely keep and eye on it and the dogs. I take that back - I would probably stop feeding the livers until the FDA figures this out a little more. The thing with any internal/organ meat is that those organs clean toxins from the blood. So, it doesn't surprise me that the livers contain small amounts of a toxin. It is surprising that it's arsenic - pretty gross really. I remember seeing in a documentary recently chicken farms. How the chicken are being grown so fast with breasts so big that they often can't walk. Makes me impatient for purchasing some land so I can raise my own meat. ETA: If there is a local butcher you may be able to find the livers/kidneys/hearts of locally grown animals that were raised on pasture. I live in a farming community so, for me, it's easy to find but I totally understand that it is not that way everywhere. |
