Barun will be two years and two months in a couple of weeks. He is from working bloodlines. Were I live (beach town in Ecuador, South America) there are no trainers or clubs (IPO). I have done OB with him but no bite work. Since he was a puppy I have taken him to places with lots of people and noises, like street markets, ocean front park, beach, etc. I don't know if I'd overdone it. He does not show any "aggression". He is very calm and ignore all kind of people and kids. Even the some weirdos approach he will not react. I must say that when at home, he will bark like crazy when people approach the gate or walk by. Same when in the car... (barrier aggression?). I'm happy he has what appears to be good nerves and is not a "dangerous dog". However, I would like him to be a little more "suspicious" of strangers. He has some DDR bloodlines on him and I read that is not until they are like three years old that they al "mature". Is there any chance he'll change?
You can't expect an untrained dog to be protect you. Some may some won't depends on the dog and the circumstances?? He is doing what you taught him to do around people. Which sounds like be calm.
When the "weirdo" approached ... what do you?? How was it handled?? I don't know, but whatever it was you did, if you handled it ... that's kinda sorta what he "expects." Now if something different than what he is used to seeing happens ... well you don't know what he will do but most likely it would be something???
Thanks. Unfortunately didn't have the opportunity to train him.... no decoys around... just weirdos
If I decide to move back to a place where I know there are the trainers, can I still teach him at his age?
Yeah I know ... no clubs around here either, ... been there live that.
You sound a little disappointed however?? As though you've accomplished nothing so far??? You've accomplished, already more than you realize ... I had to fight like a dog (no point intended) to get my dog where it sounds like your dog is with people??? And his "former" attitude is something I am "always aware of."
Even if he was a professionally trained "PPD???" He would still be able to do what you've already done, if he could not ... he could not be taken safely anywhere. A "PPD" is not of that much value if you have to leave them at home???
Hang around and keep an eye on the my dog bites, my dog growls at me linda threads and you'll gain a better appreciation for what you've already done. You've shown your dog how is expected to behave under "normal" conditions ... if something "abnormal" comes up ... he will recognize and then it's up to him. But you've done well thus far, you should be proud of your accomplishments and beyond that ... you will need help. And then you have to be careful ... incompetent "PPD" trainers ... if you can find one?? Could easily screw up what you've already done.
Thanks so much for you response. You don't know how much your words have have help me, and brought my attention to what is important. I did not want a dog that I couldn't trust around people, and thats what what I got and worked him to be. I felt I could have done more with him if I had the right help, but now I understand thanks to your feedback that I shouldn't feel disappointed. He is a happy dog and we love him. He get to go to the beach and fetch his floating kong ball from the ocean.... and he just loves that!!!! Thanks again. BTW he looks like a K9, so most people won't come close to us
Teach him obedience. Get it flawless. Train him in Czech or German or any language you prefer, you can get translations and pronunciations online.
When people see a beautifully trained working GSD, they immediately think "K9" or some type of serious protection dog. You can also bluff. If a weirdo approaches, grab his collar and tell him, "Not now, Bruno, not yet"! or something along those lines.
Is Barun toy crazy? If he is, it's relatively easy to teach him to bark on command.
And you are correct--the working lines in general do tend to mature slowly.
