My dog just bit my friend Help!
I have a dog who is fear aggressive with strangers (this still includes my friends) so I have been managing this by crating him on the rare occasion I have company until the trainer comes to my house. I realize I am in over my head with his aggression problems and need a trainer to come help me, unfortunately it's still going to be a week until I can meet with them. Apparently while I was at school though my roommates decided that because he had been doing well with obedience with me that he would do better with my friend, which couldn't be less accurate if they tried. So they went in the backyard with one of my friends while Duke was outside and as far as I've been told he "went up and sniffed, and then just lunged and bit him on the arm and on the ribs before they could fully control him and my friend got inside the house" I am completely freaking out, because now my dog has a bite record, and has this terrible experience before I could even start working with a trainer. I knew he was fear aggressive because he growled and barked at strangers in the past, but I didn't know it was this bad. Does anyone have any advice, comments, anything? :help:

not very constructive but your roommate is an idiot

This one is on them. At least you're acknowledging your dog has a problem and getting a trainer for it. Don't know what to suggest other than training and maybe drilling it into your housemates' heads that they need to leave your dog alone

Yeah this is bad ,your friend certainly made everything worse! I had the same "worries" with my guy but I was able to make sure he never got that first bite!

This is what I did, fear or aggression same deal is on Fearful Dog Blog. I did use a fabrick muzzle on walks in cool weather for a brief time. He learned I had his back and his place was behind me when I spoke to someone,it worked!

But certainly a trainer is in order...sorry this happened!

Oh trust me, they both got chewed out thoroughly. It has been even more clearly defined now, that nothing is to be done with him without my consent.

Was the dog crated, or did you leave him outside while you were at school?

He was in the backyard, they let him out to go to the bathroom. My friend was over and they went to smoke a cigarette and decided taking my friend out would be ok. I know better and have been crating him in my room the few times we've had company.

Time to really step up protecting your dog from your friends.

FA training isn't quick, so this suggestion won't be a 2 week fix until your dog is trained. And now, because of the friends, this is imperative for management.

It sounds like you guys are in a house? Put a large dog run/kennel in the back yard. Depending the amount of hours you are in school AND if the roommate can safely handle your dog without exposing strangers to possible bites, he can move your dog from crate to kennel if needed. Again, that is IF your roommate can safely handle your dog and willing to follow your instructions.

Since your dog has shown he is willing to bite, condition him to a basket muzzle. A basket muzzle will allow him to drink, pant, take treats but prevent bites.

Since your roommate is probably seen as part of the pack structure by your dog, it may not be a bad idea to have him sit in on the training sessions if he is willing. That way he can see and learn the handling techniques required and the reasoning behind them.
