Default Several Questions

This is gonna be kinda long
I will start by saying Im not completely new to the breed. I have had a pure GSD as well as a GSD/Collie mix. My girlfriend and I are looking at getting a pup in the near future. I currently live with a roommate that has an intact female pitbull. She is from my old pits litter (6 years old aprox.). She grew up with her brother but after a while they began to have issues with jelosey and had to be compleatly seperated to avoid fights. Our thoughts are to get a puppy so that there are less dominance issues and she can establish the pecking order without a fight. She does seem to do alright with smaller dogs. Are there any recommendations to avoid fights and introducing the two to each other(We can completely separate if needed). Would it make a difference on male or female when it comes to them getting along (we would prefer a female)

I don't have a lot of experience with dealing with aggression, so hopefully someone who has dealt more with situations like yours can give you more solid advice - but my 2 is that adding a puppy into the mix will not neutralize the tension between the two who are having dominance issues. Having a new dog below them in the pecking order wouldn't eliminate their own ranks they're fighting over.

I'd imagine that it could have some ill effects in a behavioral sense on the new puppy, as they tend to be impressional and learn behaviors from older dogs in the house.

I should point out that right now it is only the female pit in the house. The male stayed with the other room mate when we all moved out of that house.

I suppose if she is good with little dogs, then your puppy might be safe. I've always had males and females together, sometimes when you have 2 of the same sex, there may be fights - sometimes. Just keep your puppy safe.

The two pits likely stopped getting along and became brutal enemies because they were siblings raised together, and that happens sometimes. Usually it goes one of two ways. They like each other more than anyone else and they stay eternal puppies together infatuated with each other, or they hate each others guts compete and eventually try to fight to the death. So don't take that incident and assume the pit will respond to a pup. How does the pit respond to your other dogs?

I second baillifs response. I assumed the two pits were still currently living together. Also second the Nic Cage profile pic.

We currently only have the 1 female pit in the house. She has been the only dog in the house for a year now. When our neighbors fence blew down she got into their yard and was around their little dog and seemed to do ok but we called her back quickly. I know when my roommate took her over to her moms house though, she tried to go through the screen door at their big dog. My roommate also has rats that the pit bull is around and she does just fine.

Speaking generalities, a male would be better with than a female. Especially with an intact female with dog aggression issues.

To be honest. I would not bring a puppy into this situation. Does not seem fair to either dog.

Move out and get the dog you want. You know the breed has genetics for dog aggression- so dont get a pup while living there
