When my GSD is tired, he won't seek out the menacing squirrels. He'll go out into the yard, do his thing and then either want to come back in or rest out in the sun. When he isn't tired, he'll lay and watch for the squirrels.

German Shepherds are very territorial so anything coming into his domain, even squirrels, will be chased. I agree, I think you need to play with him, walk him outside his domain so he gets used to other areas outside of his own. Go to a dog park, try to socialize him a bit and keep him busy. When he gets busy, he will see a squirrel running by and might not do anything about it ...

I would put (electric?) wire around the trees. I am sure he'll chase squirrels even when tired so with just working him you won't save your trees.

We get him out to socialize a bunch, he is very territorial, but he will get tired out in the yard and sun on the lawn or the porch, but its' usually when I initially let him out that he will be on the prowl or sit and watch. He's been to obedience and socialization classes when he was 7 months old. An extremely smart dog, as I'm sure most of everyone's GSD's are. His intelligence never ceases to amaze me. He's extremely easy to train, but I apparently am failing in giving him things to mentally exhaust him. Thanks for the great info on neuturing him. I am somewhat relieved to learn that at least some of you have experienced something similar, albeit not to this extreme.
