Need advice on other animal agression

My darling dog, is going to be 1yr. old on 12-21-12. Ive been told that if he has behavior problems towards other dogs, animals, that it cant be overcome after that. Im not convinced of that. We need help with this area and dont have an opportunity to get him around alot of other dogs, so are there anyone out there who have overcome this? And where they over a year old? He is too smart, and to important to me to give up!

find a trainer/behaviourist.
