I think there are many helpers on Sch. fields and PSA fields who would disagree about the drives. I'd rather see an article written by them about drives than a trainer. I've been told by people that have PSA dogs that their dogs would be "kicked off a Sch. field" because they don't work in prey drive... right or wrong, that's out there. I've also heard from helpers who have had dogs go into defensive drive on the field and talk about the helper and handler being able to bring the dog 'down' into prey drive. I'd like to see some other perspective on this. Too many trainers talk about what they don't know.

I'm not going to say dogs are ruled by drives, but it is the primary motivator behind most behavior ...and not human feelings or human reasoning....and yet you constantly see advice given on the forum based on human emotion,
It will be interesting to see people's take on the above. |

soooo...what came first? The instinct or the drive? I think there are missing variables. I do think dogs experience emotion similar to ours. It may be driven by different things but I think dogs get depressed, are happy, are scared, are jealous...
All animals, including humans, are driven by survival instinct. Personally, I would think that instinct sets off the drive. Instinct to survive would send a dog into prey drive mode as well as defense mode. Does instinct build pack drive? I would think so. It's logical. Survival in packs is easier than survival along. Dogs with higher drives would naturally survive over those with lower drives. At the end of the day, no matter how much we domesticate them, they are still dogs. Just to note...people work the same way. We might think about it a bit more than dogs but first comes survival based on our drive to hunt, defend and be in groups. Then came settlements where people didn't have to fight so hard to survive so they could play more.

It might just be me, but I think the article said a whole lot of stuff about nothing. I think I might have lost the plot regarding exactly what they were trying to say.

I wish some really experienced people would weigh in. I'd like to hear more from Cliff, Anne, etc.
