Aloha and Merry Christmas to everyone. We talked earlier that Nimai (one Yr old neutered Male GS) is a nervous dog. I am starting with a pretty smart dog, (yes I know, everyone has a very smart dog) and he picks up a command after 3-5 repeats. The trick is getting him to NOT ignore the command. For example "treat" means good snacks from the fridge and he learned this after 3 sessions. "Elevator" means we are going somewhere, so go to the elevator, this he learned in 5 sessions.
Also he is driven by ritual. He barks EVERY morning at 5:55 am when a certain worker comes in. If that certain worker is has a day off, then he will sit in his overlooking the gate area and mumble/growl and not go into a bark. Anyway, he really dislikes this employee and runs at him when this employee comes into the office and will take a nip at him if I do not restrain him. When we are downstairs and in the work area, Nimai is OK with him and he pets him etc. All in all, Nimai is with me 24/7 and really is attached to me and is really a clown and very loyal. Same with some customers, he is aggressive, (luckely most customers are military males and actually appreciate that the dog is aggressive and therefore will "protect" their military stored items here). But I do not think this is OK and need to get a grip on it. (I see lawsuits from customers not so understanding). I keep the gate locked and have a doorbell to the office when customers come, but some customers are stupid. One in particular was a father with 2 young children who Nimai barked at and I was restraining him. The stupid father was trying to teach a "lesson" to the kids that there is nothing to be afraid of and come pet the nice puppy. I had to get firm with the "father" to not approach while I put Nimai in another room. Anyways I am looking for a way to control this aggression or "nervousness" Ideas? Francis I am trying how to deal with his aggression as explained below. |
