My youngest male GSD (who is 1 yr old) runs up to my oldest male GSD (who is 4) and starts licking him in the face. The oldest does a low growl and shows his teeth. (he has never bitten him though) The youngest ALWAYS flips over on his back.....and pees. Then the oldest licks the youngest private area clean. eewww. haha Sometimes the youngest will get up then and start running really fast and try to burrow under stuff like a mole.
Is this a dominance issue? Should I try to correct this or just leave it alone? And if I should correct it...how should I correct it? |

The licking on the face is submissive behavior. Your older dog is growling and saying "Leave me alone". The peeing is also a submissive behavior, as well as the rolling onto his back. Your younger dog is trying very hard to make nice with your older dog, who is indeed being very dominant over the younger one. I don't know what you should do about this, hopefully someone with more experience will chime in with advice. I am usually of the mind to let the dogs sort it out as long as there is no threat of physical violence, but I don't feel comfortable telling you to do this.

They are talking and getting along just fine. The older is being dominant, the younger is submissive. Thats what is known as a 'desirable situation'. My dogs do the same, sans the pee part. My male will actually delicately hold my females entire head in his jaws while she wimpers... the second their conversation is over, she goes right back to her playful self trying to get him to play with her.
This sort of situation, where both dogs "know their place", is infinitely desirable over dealing with two dogs battling for social position
