Default GSD and One of the cats don't get along.

I got my GSD (Capri) over 6 months ago. I have 3 Cats, and when I first got Capri, I built a door so that Capri could not go down to the basement. I left a hole in the door so the cats could come through if they wanted.

At first, she would go crazy whenever a cat would come near the door. After about 14 weeks, the first cat came up all the way through the gate and up to us on the couch. Soon after another cat came up. However, one of the cats (Chloe), will growl, hiss, and spit whenever she sees Capri. For a few months Capri would tolerate this.

However, now Capri will retaliate and charge after Chloe when she growls at her. She charges with Hackles raised, barking. Not to anthropomorphise her, but she seems to have had enough of Chloe's attitude. It is only getting worse.

Any tips you can think of? I'm going to be getting rid of Chloe soon if I don't have any other ideas to try.

Thanks!

My sister has 2 Doberman's, she got them when they were two years old from a rescue, and she had a problem with her cat and the dogs chasing the cat. She trained them with a shock collar. They no longer chase the cat at all. I was over her house the other day and observed the cat walk into the room and the dogs watched her but did not chase her...great progress from the last time I was over there, and the cat couldn't even enter a room if the dogs were there.

Some people are against the use of these collars, so if you are, it's only a suggestion.

tough situation. in order for the cat or the dog
not to get hurt maybe it's better to find a home
for the cat. make sure it's a household without dogs.

Read Lou Castle's web page on e-collars/Leerburg. That is considered something that requires a strong correction which should get the point across after a few times. If you rehome the cat, please find a good home. Too many "unwanted" animals out there already. My gsd lives with 4 indoor only cats. Some like him, some don't. He never gets the opportunity to chance them. He is confined to the kitchen/his crate when I can't supervise. The cats were here first.

When I was having a hard time with Lakota and one of my cats, my trainer told me to have a ZERO tolerance for any bs with the cat. Of course there was no way to divert Lakotas attention once she was fixated on kitty, she didn't want to eat her I think it was more of a fun chase kitty thing. Once she had a solid "leave it" things were easier. I had to resort to the water bottle spray to enforse "leave it" occasionally. I hardly ever had to use it after the first time and whenever Lakota was getting bad all I had to do was set the water bottle on the table and "leave it" was sufficient. Lakota is about 16 months now, both of my cats will run up to her to pet themselves on her legs when then come in.

I had a similar situation. One of my cats read Nero the riot act, would not put up with any BS from him, and he respected her from the beginning. The other cat is more timid and would run from Nero, which of course just encouraged him to chase the cat. I couldn't allow that -- very dangerous! I recommend an e-collar and zero tolerance for cat-chasing. One correction is all it took. Now Nero wouldn't go near that cat for salmon.
