I've a 5mo GSD which I usually take out for a walk with my mom or sister, i've noticed that he won't move if anybody else takes the leash unless it's my sister/mother (he would careless about my dad
) and if the person keeps trying to walk him away from me he'll start pushing the opposite..I don't know if It's a temporal behavior because of his age, or if it's a bad one. Somepople've told me that it's not a good behavior, that he's a Gsd thus he shouldn't act like that. My mother's friend once met him and the first thing he tried to do was that.. He told me that it's a bad behavior that i should stop overprocteting him, blablabla .. Now I wonder, is it a good/bad/temporal behavior? Last edited by Helios; 09-02-2010 at 04:09 PM. It's normal behavior, but not something you should encourage. My own dogs don't like to be handed off to someone else, but they do go with them after a minute once they are convinced they have to.

I think it's normal. He's a puppy and some stranger walks up and takes him...he's scared.
I went through this with Jax. ONly she would SCREAM like someone was killing her when I walked away. So I left her with everyone I trusted. Eventually, they get accept it. She will still, almost 3 years later, intensely watch the spot where I disappeared. |

![]() . I haven't encouraged it. If someone else takes the leash the only way to make him walk with that person is me going right in front of him.

Exactly how my Sinister is, he freaks if I walk away from him. Even if I am still in his view and I haven't even been gone a minute he greats me when I come back as though I've been gone for weeks.

Instead of making him walk with someone he doesn't know, why don't you just let him get comfortable with the idea of someone else having the leash. Once he's over that then work on walking him. Give him lots of praise for even one step forward.

But it is a good idea that someone else can take him. DD got thrown from her horse, hurt her arm, while at the stables. I had to hand Jax off to the stable owner to take DD to the ER. The stable owner had her for hours, kept her in the stable while she continued to work.
Your dog needs to be well socialized so that in emergencies, if he gets lost, etc. that others can handle him. |
