Baron. our 22 month male GSD, seems to increase his protectivness 100 fold at night. Either in the back yard, small and stockade fenced, outside in our cul-de-sac or even in the house, he seems to want to be Mr. K9 on patrol.
He is usually very friendly, dog and kid safe as well as puppy safe. Atho he has been known to "woof" at people from his run when I let them in the back yard, he will then run over to them for his customary freindly greeting and petting. But at night he seems very much more alert and watchful and suspicious than during the daytime. Some dogs he will act up a little toward even in the daytime but not nearly to the same degree as at night. My question is is this normal and to be expected? BTW - he is out of Am show lines but seems the exception to the rule -- VERY high prey drive and not usually afraid of anything and an extremely curious dog. |

My Shepherd and Doberman was like that as a kid. They were always "patrolling" at night. Not that they weren't protective of us during the day but it was like they knew we were asleep so they felt they needed to watch over us and make sure all was okay. Not sure if normal or not, but it is what they did. We never had to keep our doors locked with them in the house

Bianca is the same way. During the day on walks she has her ears back and down and mostly is busy sniffing things. However at night she has her head up, ears up and forward completely alert and "on guard" and is much more suspicious of anyone we see.

Otto rarely barks during the day - sometimes he chats with the neighbors terrier but at night, WOOF WOOF WOOF. Can't go outside without woofing. Next door neighbor tore out a good section of lawn in august and put in perrenials. Otto would go out on the porch at night and WOOF WOOF WOOF angrily at the leaves rattling in the wind. During the day, he ignored them.
Morgan never barked more at night than during the day so I don't know what his deal is! I let him out to pee and call him right back in, don't want him annoying the neighbors!

Codmaster, is it possible that you are more nervous at night, and that Baron is picking up on that?
Just a thought.

There is a doberman in training classes who suddenly decided that there are no friendly strangers at night. He is about 18 or 19 months old.
