While looking in the FAQ's for the New/Senior/Crowned etc etc... I came across the options below:

People on the board can be giving "Bad Reputations" See, it is just like High School after all.

********************

What is reputation?
Reputation is a way of rating users depending on the quality of their posts. If the administrators have enabled reputation, then the reputation icon will be visible in posts.
Reputation may be positive , negative or neutral . Negative reputation may only be given if the administrator has enabled this. Neutral reputation is only given when the person giving reputation does not meet the criteria set by the administrator to affect someone else's reputation.
How do I give reputation?
To give reputation, click on the reputation icon in the relevant post. This will reveal a form to complete with the reputation type and the reason for giving the reputation. If negative reputation is disabled then it will not be displayed in this form. You may not give reputation for the same post twice.
How do I know what reputation I have received?
You can view the reputation that you have received in your User CP (User Control Panel) where it is displayed at the bottom of the User CP page. Here you will see the latest reputation that you have received and whether this is positive, negative or neutral. Your total reputation will be shown as series of reputation indicators in your posts and profile. The more positive your reputation, the more positive icons will be shown. The more negative your reputation the more negative icons will be shown.
How much reputation is given? What is reputation power?
If the administrator has enabled this, the amount of reputation that each user will give (or take away if negative) is shown in the user's posts as 'Reputation Power'. The value of the reputation power is determined by the administrator and may increase over time depending on the settings they have applied.
What if I don't want anyone to see my reputation?
You can disable the display of your reputation by going to your User CP and selecting Edit Options. On this page you will find a check box labelled 'Show Your Reputation Level'. Un-checking this box will remove the display of your reputation and replace it with the Reputation Disabled icon. You can still give and receive reputation while your reputation display is disabled.

I want reputation, but only positive please, cause I wasn't popular in high school!

I am fairly new to this forum. I truly appreciate the ability to ask questions, and on the most part, recieve really helpful information. Also, I truly do appreciate all of the extra steps Maggie (the Mod) takes in providing links so that additional information can be found.

My biggest complaint about this site is that I am ADDICTED to it. I am supposed to be working here, and I am always coming back to this site for one more topic...just five more minutes... Really! When I go home at night & I'm working on sit/stay with my puppers and I do it sitting in front of the computer.....I wonder if there is a help group for this addiction....

Why yes...several groups...to support your addition...

Agility, Rally, OB, Schutzhund...all designed to keep you coming back to read more and ask more questions.

I think it's a conspiracy!

I've been a mod on different boards and the ones that work best have a few things in common:

Rule #1: Mods aren't allowed to engage. It's very easy to come off as sarcastic online, even if you don't mean to be. No matter how much the post tweeks you, you have to be above it. In the "goodbye" forum, one of the first posts from a Mod reads as EXTREMELY sarcastic - "Oh I think there is more to it than that". Even if is true, what need for a mod to step in with a personal comment? wouldn't a better response have been something generic about "sorry that you feel this way, rules are rules."

Mods are human and have emotions hence Rule #2: no MODing in an area that you are most passionate about. why? because it's hard to be impartial if you are deeply involved in the topic.

Rule #3 always be impartial. example: John makes a post that someone has a complaint about. Mod reads and says "I know John, he's been posting for years. He can be abrasive sometimes and people read him wrong." No warning/action is taken. Bob makes an almost identical post. Bob hasn't been here a long time and DOESN'T get the benefit of the doubt and gets a warning. That only leads to hard feelings from Bob, even if it's not "really" favoritism.
It can be hard, when you know that John didn't mean that in the light it was taken, but that shouldn't matter. punishment for A is B, even if John's tone was taken the wrong way. Perhaps Bob also has a brusque manner that is mistaken for rudeness?

I think that is the chief complaint of most - the appearance of favoritism. Doesn't matter if it's really there, only that there are examples that point that way

I wanted to clarify something, now that I've gone back and read more of the posts:

On the boards I mod, we are allowed to post in whatever topic that we want, but we also have to keep the emotion in check. If I saw a post that I know is a big topic for me, I simply point it out to another Mod. Then they keep an eye on it.

If a posting is borderline, then the Mod who saw it passes it on through group email and all the mods as well as site Admin get it and a decision is made. He (site Admin there) often says it's more work keeping the Mods in line than the members.....

I was told to look at it this way when it comes to "is this offensive" - If someone I don't like said this, would I take it the way the complaining person did? If the answer is yes, then a TO (time out) is given. That way, people you like aren't being favored because "I know he didn't mean it the way it sounded"
