You need to IDENTIFY the tick species. Tick encounter resource has some charts and you can even send in your tick.
If it is the Brown Dog Tick, those can complete their entire life cycle inside of your home. The other species need an intermediate host (usually a rodent or other small animal)
I would be checking every DAY. Twice a day, not every week. Also I have had good success treating the yard with beneficial nematodes from Arbico Organics; this only works if you can keep the soil moist.
Never heard of shaving him for this but now you need to protect him from the sun. That guard coat can be wonky growing back. Beau has a thick coat but by keeping the undercoat stripped, I can work a flea comb through him. That means, in the summer, daily brushing with a rake (though I am sure there are other ways)......then going over with the flea comb.
