Vidocq de valsory dit "Ugo" - YouTube

I don't know how to link the vid so it shows here...sorry!

Why does the dog go between the helpers/bad guys legs?
And watching the guy...walking backwards...Ive never seen a dog do that...where does that factor in?
Why a leg bite instead of the sleeve thing?
And is this dog doing the whiney/cry bark that has been talked about?

Can someone break down what is going on in this video?

Other thank not understanding what is going on I really like this dog >.< I dunno why! lol but I like him/her :lurking:

Found it :) (how are you guys linking stuff?)

Online search turned up a buncha French stuff and some more vids. Should probably have just searched here first but I'm fighting a wicked head cold so my brain isn't quite firing on all cylinders.

He's lovely! (And I'm glad I'm not totally out to lunch I'm saying that!!)

Odd though that, after having searched and read about him here, there's a thread about his bloodlines and how Fero, in his pedigree a whole bunch, is described as producing really sporty dogs (among other things :-/)
Vidocq doesn't look 'sporty' to me. I always equate that word with the leaner, super fast dogs?

There is a 1/2 sib on the sire Ellute that I'm somewhat familiar with, same gorgeous coloring.
Justin was pretty impressive when I met him. He had just returned from Egypt or some other desert country and as soon as he was dropped off to his new handler, he immediately engaged and was a joy to play with. I saw him again recently(two years later) he was one of the dogs used for protection certification seminar. He was just as impressive/showing power in the protection. Though his obedience needed some work, pretty sure that was due to the handler, not so much 'him'.

He's lovely too. Very much what my brain thinks when I think GSD if that makes any sense at all. Sort of a stockier type I think?
I have no idea how to break down the pedigrees. Interesting that they have the one Fero dog in them (multiple times in Vidocq) that is more know for the negative traits. Wonder how that trickled down to their progeny...if they have any?

this is French ring , which is completely different than schutzhund. The decoy and the dog and handler have friendly contact with each other . Decoy meets, speaks with you , shakes your hand , and each goes there way. The dog must not target the decoy but must be aware . After heeling forward briefly , the decoy changes direction passes you , dog is neutral still , decoy is behind , dog watches him. As decoy comes in closer dog will still be by your side but walking backwards or on angle facing the decoy watching your back. As long as decoy behaves dog is okay. If decoy reaches out to grab you raise hand , act aggressive dog puts stop to that .
Defense of handler.
the dog must be aware of the goings on in the environment to control them .
the walk between the legs is to control movement , stop escapes .

some pups in litters walk naturally on the left , others always select a right position and these you guide to your left , others naturally go between the legs. For dogs destined for Ring , you praise this , exploit a natural tendency. If not you make it uncomfortable and the dog selects another position .
In ring there are exercises to go through but the routines are looser . The decoy takes advantage of a situation. For instance if the dog fails to maintain a position between legs on the escort , the decoy does not help the dog by providing an opening, he walks with his legs tightly together to frustrate the dog .
There is no catching the dog. The decoy deliberately , MUST, try to escape the dog. Defeat the dog. He is not a helper.
These decoys look at the dogs as super stars and take great pride , making comparative notes among each other in having cost points on such and such a dog . If decoys are easy on the dog , the head judges will discipline the decoy .

this is how all the sports should be. would really separate a lot of dogs. must be REALLY fun for the helper too.

This looks much more interesting to me than IPO.

They are completely different sports, designed for different things. The good thing is, there are many different sports out there. So you have the option of doing what you like best.

he doesn't flinch , he has to quickly make up his mind to charge the decoy out of that zone or stay with the basket . The object must be guarded . There are chalk dust circles which are zones . The outer one the dog remains watchful , the closer in the more assertive the dog should be in keeping the basket . The dog chooses how to do it.

In this one the dog is more assertive in driving the decoy away but that leaves a space and time for the decoy to snatch the basket
