Yes, this is very common and do-able but get them when they are babies at around 5 weeks of age. Introducing adult males is tougher. Check out: Rat Forum

I got a neutered male from the humane society. They do not adopt out any animal that is intact, even rats.
Males are easy going while the females never sit still. Have fun with them. You are going to love it!
