Default Sudden Pain/Panic Howling

Gable woke me up at 4:30, howling extremely loudly in his open crate, like he was panicked or in pain or something. Either way, it only lasted a few seconds, but he sounded distressed. As far as I can tell, totally unprovoked.

I checked him all over: pulse, gums, etc. and couldn't find anything abnormal. He settled down and drifted back to sleep, but I'm awake and still shaking.

He had a little diarrhea yesterday, but didn't act unusual or anything. It wasn't even very bad...just a little runny. Normal color and everything. He seemed completely himself and still had a good appetite and seemed in good spirits all day yesterday.

And he still wants to play with the cat and follow me around and chew on/play with his chew toy, so that's a good sign, right?

Is it possible that I could be really overthinking this and it was just a nightmare or something? That's what I'm praying for.

Thoughts, please? I'm an absolute mess.
