Many of us are in your situation cause we have to work to feed the dog!
It's hardest with the puppy, crate training is a must. If you can work out some way to have someone come in the middle of the day it's a help because most puppies can't hold it for 9 hours. At least for the first few weeks, but if you get a puppy a bit older that's easier.
Also we need to get into the mindset when we do get home, generally we need to immediately put on our 'play clothes' to take that bored/crate trained puppy out for the next few hours to exercise and socialize it so the rest of the night is wonderful.
Finding great puppy classes is great too because of the built in socialization and training factor to make things easier!
