Hello all! New member and GSD owner. Last week I rehomed a 1 1/2 year old male intact GSD. His previous owners "didn't have time" for him. He came from a home with an infant, a 5yr old and another large male dog. He comes to a home with a 10 year old female cocker spaniel, the first day was an adjustment for them both but they have since done very well together. My boyfriend I also 4 children together ages 5, 8, 13 & 15. While he was meant to be my boyfriends dog, he has become a little more attached to me. His proctetive instincts have already kicked in as well. He enjoys spending time with the BF and I, but does not seem to like the children as much. We are taking it slow, ensuring they aren't to pushy but that they come around him enough, give him treats, help with feeding etc. He'll be ok, then they will dissapear for awhile, mainly the teenagers, then he goes back to the growling. He doesn't charge or go after just growling and distancing himself. He is a very good dog, knows all basic commands, also very eager to learn. I'm looking forward to teaching him even more. We had our first guest last night, she rang the door bell, I took him to the door with me, made him sit, there was a little bit of growling as she came in, we did introductions and he was great. She also had an infant and it seemed as soon as she realized she had a baby, he was overjoyed and welcoming. Does anyone has any advise on getting him to warm up and be more comfortable with the children? When we picked him up, he interacted well with the 5 year old in his previous home. So I'm certain it's possible. Should I just give him more time. Tonight, I've made a point that the teenagers have to hang out with the family, so he realizes they are one of us. Any other tips?
