Default Being Boisterous?

I've always been told that to have a well trained dog you need to be the one in charge. The head of the pack, so to speak.

Normally I'm quite boisterous with dogs. I'll play fight with them when they're getting play-fightey and I'll pull their legs and try to put them on their back and hold them their (Not violently and I do my best not to hurt them). If they're jumping up on me I won't just tell them down I'll push them down by their heads and just generally shove them about.

Is this the right thing to do? Should you playfight with your dogs (Assuming you come out on top every time) or is it better to stay well away from confrontation in any form?
