minor rant, other dog owner, last day of class
So today was the last day of classes, and neither girl is ready for RNs yet, but that's ok. The next class for Karma would the the Rally class at the place where I am training. I hate the place but I like the instructor.
For Lassie's puppy class, there was no other class working at the same time. But the later class, Karma's had the Rally class in the other end of the room. They often have to walk through, and use the same doors, which means they walk through our class.
Well, that all isn't all that important. I have been to the Rally class with Joy, and Heidi might have worked a few weeks while Joy was in heat. And in the class was this dude with a border collie. His dog is just fine. And I didn't have any problems with him then.
Today, Karma was in rare form. Not sure why. Maybe the cold and the high winds had her frisky. Maybe she's getting ready to come into season, born January 29th, so not impossible there. But she was very interested in ALL the other dogs. She did not bark or act aggressive. But she wanted to play with everyone. She wanted to play with the black lab mix, and then the golden doodle that looked like an otter hound. Then the other golden mix. Then a couple of dogs that came in to go into the next class. What a pain.
So finally, we are all done, and I go outside to the common field to let her potty before the hour trip home, and this guy with the BC is in front of the door. Of course mine isn't going to want to potty with other dogs there, but I had to let her try. He had let go of his leash, and was talking to some other woman.
His dog starts to walk over to Karma. I am waiting for him to get his leash -- this is a dog-person, he should know better. But he didn't, he just informed me that his dog was a therapy dog and he wouldn't do anything.
So I used the "I'm not sure about my dog, to get him to reel his dog in."
He didn't. He said his dog works with aggressive dogs, and see there is no problem. The other woman said, yes, it's already diffused. What the??? There was nothing to difuse. Karma is NOT a dominant bitch, she is not aggressive, I am not there for a doggy play date, though Karma has played a few times with sheps that do not live with me. No problems.
Right now I am training her for Rally. This means going to shows without getting all excited about playing with other dogs. That is not what we are there for. If I wanted to go play with other dogs, there is a dog park not five miles from this training center that I could go to. Yupp, long drive to go let the dogs play, but that at least is free.
Why is it that people assume that you want your dog to go sniff butts with other dogs and romp with them. I did NOT want for this to happen, but I would have had to wake up my inner bitch to tell this guy off, and as it was the last day, I decided it just wasn't worth the effort.
As for diffusing the situation. There has to be a situation first. Whatever. This same yayhoo walked through our class to get outside and started talking to one of our members without bothering to pay attention to his dog who was on a bit of a social mission of his own.
