No Problems Just Curious...New to GSDs
So we've had our GSD for almost 8 weeks. We absolutely adore him.
I am truly amazed at how different GSDs are from many other breeds. And I am not talking about looks either. Boy is my Jackson ever a little landshark! He accidentally caused my 8 year old to need 3 stitches a couple of weeks ago. Those sharp puppy teeth and then her snatching back caused a slice to be put in her arm. It was not a fun day. But she does have the illustrious title of being the first of our children to ever have stitches. She thinks that part is pretty cool. Anyways Jackson is a little over three months old and I can see his landshark habit of biting people is finally wearing down. It has been a hard road due to my three year old thinking it was all great fun to wave her hands in front of his face and of course all he saw was something to catch. No matter how many times he caught her hands she would still return the next day to do it all over again...sometimes only hours later!
I've only walked Jackson on a leash about three or four times. The first time he just sat down and refused to move. Then we went on a camping trip and we would have to stop for potty breaks I would get him out on his leash and that really helped to train him because I would just sit him down with his leash on and let him decide whether or not he was going to get up and potty or just sit there. So he learned to walk on the leash by me taking him for potty breaks while on the road. Last week I actually took him for a walk and amazingly enough he was walking next to me almost perfectly. His only issue was leaning against my legs while walking and occasionally trying to jump on the back of my legs.
Though he still has accidents in the house he is for the most part potty trained. I swear I've never had a dog train so fast. He practically pees on command. There is one problem though...LOL...I think he is afraid of being outside at night by himself. He can whine at the door to go potty and during the day he will go out by himself but at night if I try to make him go outside alone he will cry to come back in and then walk around the house crying because he still has to pee. So now I've just learned to go stand on the porch and he will run out to around 5-10 feet away and pee and then come right back.
He loves playing with my 2 yr old Feist but my 10 yr old husky/boxer, Jamie, is another story. Jamie growls at him if he gets within 5 feet of her space. Not sure what her problem is as she accepted the two year old Feist with no problem. Though I think it was because the Feist was extremely submissive and Jackson is totally NOT submissive. So instead the devil may care dog just stands about 6 feet away from her and barks at her. I think he does it just to annoy her.
Jackson is currently undergoing some sort of growth spurt. He is constantly hungry and has been eating about 3-4 small/medium bowls of food a day. It frankly has amazed me at how fast he's grown.
How hot natured is your GSD? My Jackson sleeps on the AC vents when the AC pops on. He wants to be outside when the weather is nippy. And he pants like crazy if the house is too warm. We have the AC set to turn on at 78 and he's already panting like crazy by 74.
Though I love it when he sleeps with us I also love it when he sleeps in his kennel area. I had a hard time getting him to stop crying all the time when I put him in there. I end up sitting or standing right next to his kennel to let him know that A. I am here so don't worry, B. now that you see I'm here then you can tell I hear you whining so hush it and go to sleep.
That was totally long...but hey...what quirks have you noticed about your dog?
Jackson likes getting in front of you as you are trying to walk somewhere. I'm unsure as to why he does that though...it is cute but frustrating. He's already had his toes stepped on a time or two due to his ability to thrust himself in front of oncoming feet.
