Not interested in food, can't keep weight on
Hello, we adopted our GSD/Great Dane in July and from day one we've had a heck of a time getting him to eat. He's a big boy (32" at the shoulder) but is way too skinny and needs to put weight on.
He is one year old next week and the vet says there is no medical reason, i.e. his mouth and teeth are in great shape, he appears healthy and all his labs are perfect. He is very high energy (that is an understatement) and he'd rather be playing with us than eating.
We have tried a variety of super premium kibbles as well as basic premium kibbles (grain-free) and I hesitate to go any further down the quality ladder, but he is not tempted by these foods, even when we add canned food, yogurt, warmed broth, etc. We give him 3 cups twice a day but he's eating a total of about 2 cups per day, and some days he skips it altogether - he's not ill but he'd rather chew a nylabone or run around in the yard.
He is very attached to us so he doesn't like to be left on his own to eat -he is anxious to be back with the pack. If you sit near him while he's eating he just wants to play or be petted. We refuse to engage - it is suppertime, pal! - and he'll eat a few pieces and then just lie down, perfectly content to leave his food. I can hear his stomach growling!
I jog with him 4 miles a day and he plays fetch, frizbee and he has a tug rope hanging from a tall tree branch that he attacks daily, so there's no shortage of exercise. He's also in obedience classes weekly and we train daily on his exercises, so he gets mental stimulation as well.
I've never had a dog that turned his nose up at food, so I'm wondering if there is a brand of food that I could try that others have had success with, or any other suggestions. He could use a good 20 pounds.
We have tried the "he'll eventually eat when he's hungry" method, but this has been going on for 3 months and he's never seemed to be hungry yet!
I appreciate any advice you might have.
