I used to as well. Dogs will be there and I can work on things with lots of distractions. The fence is there as a barrier, but other dogs are clearly visible and distracting.
I understand the concept. I tried it once, not going in the off leash area and my dog did not care for it. I mentioned it to my trainer and she said to stay away from dog parks even if you're not going in the off leash area. It's not a good idea. Since our dog park seems to attract a few idiots I' will gladly stay away.
My dog was dog aggressive though. He did not mellow even at a distance at the dog park. My trainer said not to take him there anymore to bring him to a class. Yes, he did react when we first got to class, but mellowed after about 5 minutes of being around the other dogs. Something he would not do at the dog park. Our dog park just has/had some type of weird vibe that he did not like. There was a pretty bad fight in the off leash area when we were there. Maybe he was just sensing a bad situation.
After a few classes he did fairly well around other dogs. I could usually tell when he would react and tell him to leave it and he was ok. It was something we were working on when he passed.
