Hello im not sure if im expecting too much from my 4 month GSP Louis.
Louis is extremely well behaved and an active puppy. We started obedience training with him the moment we got him home at 8 weeks. Within first couple of weeks he managed to pick up the usual commands such as sit, stand, down, fetch, come, heal etc. We are currently working on stay which he will do as long as I'm not going to far from him. Currently we are talking around 15metre, any further he comes running to me.
I have two children 11 and 9yr old and he is fantastic with them. He's also extremely well behaved with strangers in the park when we are walking off leash. If the stranger shows no interest to Louis then louis he will continue to walk be my side like as if the stranger does not exist.
When we are training or playing in the park providing there's no dog within say 20 metres of us Louis's recall I would say is around 90%. He does look at me the odd time to say no I'm tired so I'm not coming lol. Which can be expected.
So far so good. My problem started when Louis sees another dog. I will notice the dog usually before Louis does and get him in the down position so he doesn't go running over to the dog. If the dogs within 20 metres of us Louis will ignore everything I say and insist on running over to the dog with his tail wagging and has a sniff. I could say what ever to him as he's running over to the other dog but it makes no difference. He's not aggressive and doesn't bark when he sees other dogs but insists on saying hello. This will last approx 10 seconds and he comes running back looking very sheepishly because he knows he was not allowed to do that.
The thing is I want Louis to socialise with other dogs that's why I take him to the park 3 times a day but I want it to be more controlled. I don't think it's acceptable any dog charging up to another dog. Firstly I get the oh my god u have a GSP man eating dog look from other dog owners or you get the ones who are extremely terrified and pick their dog up people. I appreciate that Louis shouldn't run into other dogs private space etc.
so my question is, is this normal puppy behaviour, and i am expecting too much from my puppy? And if so do they grow out of it? If its not normal behaviour then what can I do to rectify it?
