Hoping I might be able to get some advice on our 7 year old female German Shephard Max.
In August of this year in the space of two weeks the following changes happened in our household. We brought a new German Shephard puppy into our family (Sam) and then unfortunately two weeks later our oldest boy Kai had to be put to sleep (aged 12) as his back legs were gone.
About 3 weeks after all these occurances our other German Shephard Max had a cluster of seizures ( 4 in a 24 hour period) they were really bad. We took her to the hospital and they ran all the tests had an MRI and through elimination we were left with Epilepsy.
We started her on medication and was told that she would still probably fit about once a month but with the medication they would not be that servere and to leave her when she fitted.
We thought it might have been triggered by the old dog being put down and the puppy coming on the scene all at once.
Yesterday she fitted again. She dropped and had a massive seizure early evening and then another one a couple of hours later and then and even larger one during the night. These are the worst seen and thought the dog was going to die. The last one lasted a really long time and she was foaming at the mouth. She is now on the highest dose of her medication but now my mother is worried and thinks we might have to have the dog put to sleep.
As many of you probably know Epilepsy can not be diagnosed they simply eliminate everything else and this is what you are left with.
We are wondering if anyone else out there has had a similar experience with their dog and might know of anything else we can try. Or the slim possibility that it is not Epilepsy and there is something else we have not considered.
Ruled out:- Cancer/tumor/toxin's/thyroid/one other.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
