Fleas, Allergic Reaction to Fleas and Comfortis
Hello GSD Lovers!
I’m looking for some input.
I just brought a house that is mostly carpeted, and (I found out the hard way) was infested with fleas. The previous owner had 4 dogs. I have three. (2 Pembroke Welsh Corgis and 1 GSD)
Well… I seem to have gotten the flea issue under control through a couple effective methods – 1 being Alpine’s flea spray. (Stuff works GREAT!!)
The Corgi’s are 10, and the GSD is 4. I’ve never had to deal with fleas before, so my immediate reaction was to buy flea & tick shampoo. That didn’t work. They’ve gotten several baths, but to no avail.
The Corgi’s have been generally okay considering the circumstances, but my GSD seems to be allergic to fleas/flea bites. His skin turned pink, and he often licks and scratches himself. His skin started to flake on his back, and I noticed some scabs near his rear.
I took all of them to the Vet. I was sent home with Comfortis. Everyone got the appropriate dose. My GSD & one Corgi did fine. The other Corgi vomited 8 times. (Poor Baby!!!!)
Now, it’s been exactly 1 week since they were given Comfortis. That combined with the Alpine Flea Spray, constantly vacuuming, etc. I have not seen ANY fleas… so far. HOWEVER, my poor GSD is still somewhat pink. Not nearly as pink as he was though, but , nonetheless. He is still itchy too. He doesn’t scratch as often either, but he is still itchier than normal.
Because his skin seems so sensitive right now, does it make sense to give him yet another bath? I picked up Vet’s Best Hypoallergenic Shampoo which worked really well, but didn’t eliminate the problem.
Does anyone have any input on how to get my GSD’s skin back to normal now that the flea issue appears to be under control?
(Sorry for the long post. This topic has me a bit stressed!)
