Desperate for advice, experience, anything!
Greetings, I'm looking for experience/advice or any info you can offer regarding what to try for 9 yr old GSD & Black Lab mix. About 4 years ago we transitioned her from lower quality food (basically filled with grains, byproducts and lamb). Although she does better on grain free, she has chronic sporadic bouts of diarrhea, anal gland problems, vomiting and dull coat. I feel like we've tried everything. She'll be ok on a grain-free food for months, then isn't able to tolerate it anymore. Currently she's on Orijen Senior, which she likes, but can only tolerate 1.5 cups a day or she has diarrhea. She also gets 1/2 can of Hills i/d prescription for the past 10 months, because vet recommended it to help the GI issues. I don't want to feed her just the i/d though because it would run $300/month and although she likes it, her coat is duller on it and she itches probably because of the corn in it. She's been losing weight too. She's been to the vet and bloodwork is fine, although xrays have shown a tad enlarged liver and spleen (but bloodwork doesn't show there's any particular problem with either). Tried adding digestive enzymes and probiotics, as well as adding some canned pumpkin to her food. We also tried dehydrated raw, which she still had sporadic vomiting, but did help the GI issues. I just don't know what to look at anymore and have read hours worth of articles & holistic vet journals to try to figure this out, but coming up short. The vet didn't want to do any allergy testing because they said it was unreliable - has anyone had experience with allergy testing?
I've also read that high protein and/or high fat can cause GI problems - but seems like to go to lower fat food or lower protein she'd have to be back on grain or carb laden diet. It's just so confusing and I don't know what direction to go. Sidenote - all diet changes have occured VERY slow, as to not cause more GI distress. Any experience or advice would be GREATLY appreciated!
