Yes I went with Vinnie on the name
So as some of you may know, I adopted my dog, a 6 year old GSD just a few days ago from the Humane Society (they said he was a stray but I think he was a backyard dog for someone as he knows how to "shake"). He is not house broken and does seem to have separation anxiety from me (I haven't left the apartment more than a few minutes, and today I am extending my leave time to an hour).
This Friday night I have to go out of town and won't be back until the evening of the 21st due to a family emergency with my father. I know the timing is bad.
I am most likely having a house sitter during this time (I might board him but I'm leaning towards a house sitter). She told me her hours are this (she works at an animal hospital so thus far I feel comfortable with her staying in my home which is hard for me...).
House sitter's work schedule at the hospital:
Oct 12-I work 8-4, but will check on your dog during my 1 hour lunch
Oct 13-I work 9-1
Oct 14- I work 1-7
Oct 15-I work 9-7, but will check on him during my 1 hour lunch break
Oct 16-I'm off
Oct 17- I work 9-7, but will check on him during my 1 hour lunch break
Oct 18- I'm off
Oct 19- I work 8-4, but will check on your dog during my 1 hour lunch
Oct 20- I work 9-1
* He shouldn't ever be alone for more than four and a half hours during the day
This is what I am trying to figure out. Starting tomorrow until Friday I'm back at work (I leave the house at 4 and I'm typically back by 4).
For this week should I pay $$$ to have him go to day care (I wouldn't do this long term though), or should I crate him during the day, or should I just try to see what happens if I give him "free reign" of the apartment?
I bought the crate just yesterday which I haven't used yet since I've been home with him all day. I feel bad leaving a dog in a cage...
Sorry for all the questions. This is just the first time I have ever owned a dog that wasn't a family pet. Growing up, my family has always had GSD (mixed as well as purebred) but it was a different situation as we had a doggy door leading to a huge grassy yard with the dogs being house broken within a few days.
