Folks, I'm sure this topic has been beaten to death, but my searches have not revealed the type of opinions I seek, so here goes:
I'm a lifelong dog owner, mostly pet dogs but also a few bird dogs and more recently a couple border collie males.
My question is this: for reasons of size and possibly agility, I think a female GSD may be my next dog. I prefer male dogs for temperament reasons - as a generalization I have found male dogs to be generally more easy going, generally more able to get along with other dogs, and generally more sociable with dogs, cats, and humans.
I have been reading for some time various forum postings, ads, etc, about female GSDs. It SEEMS (again, this is a perception that may or may not describe reality) that females tend to be more dog reactive - especially with other female dogs. For example, there are many rescue female GSDs whose descriptions carry the warning: "Does not get along with other female dogs." There is also the famous quote "bitches leave stitches" that I got from another working dog forum.
Do you perceive female GSD's to be more intolerant of other dogs - especially females, and slightly more reactive to environmental stresses or is my thinking incorrect? If so, can these problems be overcome by early socialization and ongoing training?
Thanks in advance for any information.
