We brought home our new German shepherd puppy last Sunday at 7 weeks old.. Overall he is a great puppy, doesn't even really have accidents in the house as he was raised outside and is comfortable going to the washroom on the grass, eats well, gets along with our 10 month old lab really well.
It's only when we put him in the cage at night that we're having some issues.. He will wake up screaming at 5 or 6 am, which is fine because I understand he has to pee so I take him outside and then bring him right back in to the cage. But the problem is that he continues to scream in the morning, it's like once he's up, he's up for the day.
The first week I was very understanding.. He's just a baby, we took him from his mom and he needs time to settle in. But at this point a week and a half in, I feel like he should be able to go back to sleep for a couple of hours in the morning should he not? We have the cage at the end of our bed and when he's fussing we don't acknowledge him at all. But after an hour of him screaming i finally give up and take him out because we sure aren't going back to sleep anymore.
Should I be moving the cage to a different floor in the house? Is it more difficult for the puppy because our 10 month old lab is free to roam around and he isn't? I have tried giving him a good thick antler that he loves to chew on (and can't break pieces off of) when I put him back in the cage in the morning and he simply ignores it and instead scratches on the cage and cries. Does he just need more time with the same routine?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
