My dog, lab/retriever boxer mix used to get hot spots every summer. This year he got none. I've used the same food and he gets wet everyday and it's been a really hot summer and it is always humid here.
My trick is douse the dog every 2 weeks with neem oil.(even every 1 week when my dogs mix with dogs with fleas) It has worked a treat. No fleas, no hotspots and no mange on my other dog. Coats are really nice. No cysts either and no elbow marks. They call it the village pharmacy in India and I can see why.
What I used to do with hot spots was scrub with a dry towel and then apply Iodine or rubbing alcohol to disinfect. This does seem to cure them too but they keep reappearing in other places. Any scabs I'd soak with the Iodine and rub off when soft or just scratch them off.
