Typical 4 month old puppy behavior? -Latching onto adult dog's faces
My 4 month old puppy is exhibiting behavior with my two adult GSDs, a 3 year old female and a 4 year old male that I'm not so sure about.
She is a very high drive little lady. The breeder's children called her the devil puppy ;P LOL We have had her since she was 8 weeks old.
While interacting with my adult dogs she constantly licks their muzzles and then latches onto their longer hair around their face and holds on. She will hang on until I tell her "no" or call her name. Just to see how long she'll go I have watched without intervening outside and her main goal is to lick and then latch on and she will only let go when the dogs bolt away to retrieve a toy. As soon as she catches up she is back on someone's face. If we're not playing fetch and the are on an off-leash stroll she latches on and only lets go if I say "no" or call her name. She only uses the very front of her mouth and it seems like submissive behavior.
Same story inside. When she is out and about in the areas we have gated off for her (living room and kitchen) she is constantly licking and nibbling the adult dogs all over, tripping them up by winding in and out of their legs. If they lay down she is in their face rolling all over them. She does not stop. She seems obsessed with my adult dogs.
I am hoping one of the adults will give her a correction, but they really don't seem to mind. They both curl their lip back when she is rolling all over them and nibbling their faces but she ignores it completely. They eventually move away, just to be harassed all over again.
I gave my male a pig ear this evening and the puppy was all in his face. He started to growl and show teeth like I had never seen before. He did this for quite a while. The whole time, puppy didn't seem phased at all. She laid down and squirmed her way on her back, in between him and the pig ear, licking his face. My adult dog was FIERCE sounding. He never bit her, just a whole lot of noise and a big display. I separated the puppy from him three times. Puppy just comes back for more. Not so interested in the ear, just my dog's face. After the third time I put her in her crate.
The adult female's tactic is avoidance. I gave her a pig ear and she abandoned it as soon as puppy came up. I don't know if she would do the same if I wasn't present.
I'll look at my adult dogs with the puppy attached to their face and the look in their eyes says "help me". I feel so bad!
Is this normal puppy behavior she will grow out of? Or is this the start of something potentially worse?
My theory is that because of her temperament and personality (she gives everything extreme 110% ) she is just 110% silly puppy and I am hoping she will grow out of it. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
