My German Shepherd's name is Bones. There are some things that I'm confused about. Let's be honest, I'm pretty lost.
I got Bones two day ago, so he's pretty new to the house and our other animals (a beagle, wiener dog, and a cat). I have a problem with not knowing how old he is. The people I got him from claim he's 7 weeks old, but I've been searching the web for early obedience games, or training, and leash training, etc., and the pups I see in videos and pics seem to be a bit larger.
Bones right now is pretty fluffy, a little chubby (he's getting over hook-worms, got a shot for them yesterday morning) and his ears are still down. He still seems to have that drunken puppy walk. Some I'm wondering if he's only about 5 weeks old. I'll try to post a photo of him soon on this thread.
Assuming he is 5 weeks old: What should I be doing to properly train him in obedience and manners? Are there any early-on repetitious techniques I can start immediately? How do I establish myself as the Alpha-Male to such a young puppy? Will that have to wait?
This is what I've done the past two days
I put Bone in a kennel at night. The kennel is proportional to his CURRENT size. I will have to buy another one as he grows. His kennel is placed in our bedroom, next to my side. Bones has done okay through the night. He has woken me up, but I wait a few minutes before letting him out, ONLY to take him outside to go potty. He has done pretty good with potty training so far. Every hour I take him out and he goes, I give him a treat and praise him. I also take him after he eats and wait for him to potty, followed by another treat and praising. This morning, for exercise, I fast walk in my backyard and he'll hop along after me, for about 10-20 minutes, or however long he keeps interest. Whenever we go inside, I place him on the porch and walk in (if he tries to go along side me, or before me, I place him back on the porch), then proceed to call his name. When he enters I praise him.
I let him nap on the couch next to me. Is that okay? Should I get a doggy bed and put him on it during naps?
I don't mean to sound overwhelmed, or lost, but this is the breed of dog I've always wanted. And I would like to have Bones a loyal, obedient guardian over my guardian over my growing family as well as part of it.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
