Rapid Weight Loss and No Peristalsis in Intestines
Hello- I am new to this forum and I have a very urgent issue. Over the past 3 weeks my 4 year old unaltered male GSD has lost about 15 lbs. We changed foods and added supplements to his diet thinking maybe his appetite was diminished due to the heat (we live in Southern California and had a hot couple of weeks recently), but this week his weight just dropped even more. He has also had loose stool, and intermittent diarrhea for the past week (we thought the food change may have been the culprit). He still has an appetite and is energetic- playing with our other GSD, barking at the neighbor dogs, and playing fetch with his favorite bouncy ball.
So today we took him to the vet and they did blood work and X-Rays. In the X-Rays it appears that his intestines are not following a normal intestinal "pattern", and are filled with air (very dilated)- but he is very skinny and not bloated. The vet's best estimate is that he has a disconnect in his brain that isn't telling his intestines to dilate and contract (peristalsis), which means the intestines can't move the food through the intestinal tract, causing diarrhea and loose stools, and is basically causing him to starve to death even though he is eating normally and drinking normally.
The vet is researching for us, and is sending the xrays and lab results to several colleagues with more GSD experience, specifically experienced in treating GSDs or other breeds with these types of symptoms. They will not have the labs back until Monday morning, so we will know more specifics of what is wrong at that time. But in the meantime the vet has us beefing up his diet to a higher calorie diet, hoping his body can absorb a little bit of the nutrients he needs to survive this while they figure out what is going on, and if it can be fixed.
Has anybody here had a similar experience, or knows of a similar/same condition? If so, were you able to successfully resolve it and had a good recovery of your GSD? Any tips, suggestions, etc... would be very much appreciated.
(Sorry so long winded, I'm having a tough time being concise and want the details available in case anybody has had a similar experience)
Thank you in advance!
