Pits don't deserve the terrible rep they have. But pits bred these days tend to be more aggressive towards other dogs and precautions should always be taken.
Regardless, that sounds SO scary! In case something like this ever happens again and water doesn't work (it doesn't always work) then grab the dog who is the one doing the attacking and pick it's back legs up in the air and start walking backwards and keep it in that position until it calms down. It puts the dog in a position that it can't really attack you and it's being forced (gently) away from the other dog.
