My puppy Franklin, is almost 4 months old. He is a working line sable boy and he has been with me since he was 8 weeks old. Some days I feel like telling the world everything he does but of course I would drive everyone away eventually
. Then I thought that some people might on this very forum would actually like to hear what others with puppies do generally each day.
On weekdays, Franklin usually sleeps until my alarm goes off. He sleeps next to my bed on the floor with his leash on and around my wrist. I still don't trust him not to go wandering off in the middle of the night and he is still learning it's sleep time. I have him sit while I quickly use the bathroom then we go to the door. I have him sit again while opening the door and we go out onto the deck. I live in a second floor condo in the city. He runs down all the steps to the yard and does all his pees and poop then runs right back up to me. I still can hardly believe he does this.
He comes back in and I make the coffee while he picks out a toy and we go back out onto the deck for coffee time and a little bit of chewing and fetch. I live behind an elementary school so there are hundreds of kids in the playground at this time of morning. Fetch isn't much right now and just involves 2-3 throws. Each times he brings it back, he gets a treat for putting the item in my hand. He settles down and entertains himself with a hoof or bully stick for awhile as I check facebook on my android and drink my coffee. Sometimes I'll grab a little measuring cup with kibble and sit on the deck and have him lay down, brushing him as I put one piece of kibble at a time in front of him. Then we go down to the yard again and I pick up his poop while he follows me around before going inside to shower and get dressed.
He hangs out with my room mate while I do this, then we get harnessed up, I make a protein smoothie and take it with me. We head out for about an hour. We aren't walking for the entire time. We meander around checking everything out, watching bikers and joggers go by while working on our focus and I throw in a "come" now and then and once in awhile a sit or down. We see dogs and he looks up at me and he gets a treat. Some dogs are very friendly so he can visit after he sits for a treat. While they socialize, a few times I tell him to "check in" and he whirls around mid-play and sits for another treat - then I tell him to go ahead and visit some more. We walk along the lakefront, but avoid dog parks and dog beach. I will go to dog beach when he is a little bigger and only during off times when no one is really around.
By time time we get back, it's time for work. I have a stuffed bone, stuffed kong, a ceramic bowl with a few ice cubes in it, and a puzzle toy with his lunch inside. He crates up with these goodies, and believe me - he is practically throwing me out the door so he can go into his crate.
When I get home 3-4 hours later, about 2-3 pm depending on the day, he does his business again and sometimes he hangs out in the kitchen while I clean, or I sit down with a snack while he chews on something awesome. Some days I have another walk to do but that's just across the street and I take him with me. If we do that, or if he plays with my next door neighbor's Husky, we sit at the cafe down the street and watch all the 9-5ers get off the train and come home. Well, some head for the bar across the street which only gets amusing later. Other days we saunter around another block with senior citizen living facilities and they just love him to death. He gets exposed to walkers, canes, wheelchairs, the whole bit. Well, by the time we get home, it's another hour until dinner and he takes a break while I work at my computer. He lays in the kitchen door while we make dinner and he eats when we do. After dark, we go to the elementary school playground (it's lit at night) with a 30 ft line and play with the flirt pole, do puppy runaways and I maneuver him around the playground equipment and he goes up and down the steps but I don't do anything that's high. It's actually pretty nice because the astro turf there is padded and bouncy.
On weekends now we have training at the club and we'll get to the forest preserve soon. (I want his rabies done first). Whew, well this was break time before dinner and it's time to eat. I hope someone enjoys my musings.
