My new best friend! (Cade)
Well, I finally did what I have always wanted to do for all of my life. I brought home my first GSD on September 20th, 2013. Cade is 11 months and was born on October 22nd, 2012. I bought him from a breeder who said he was the pick of the litter. So far, he has been everything I wanted. A loyal and brave friend that will always be there for me.
His obedience is great for his age and knows several commands. Basic ones such as stay, sit, wait, down and even some interesting ones such as "protect me", "dont let them in" and "guard the house, Cade". He is good on leash but still is a work in progress. He is a bit protective on leash compared to being off but again, some training will do the trick. He absolutely loves the dog park and we plan on going every Sunday evening. He gets along with the dogs and their owners very well. He can get a bit excited to a point where he doesn't listen to me but he has to learn that I am the boss and that's what we are currently working on mainly right now.
He is the biggest suck ever. He sticks his head between my arm and side and just begs affection. Also, you find that sweet spot on his belly, he will love you forever. Period.
A couple issues have came up though but again, he is still getting used to everything so things will get better. His separation anxiety is bad but is improving. I have in a crate at night for the first week so he can get used to his "den" and the first night was terrible. Same when leaving for school, I have to have him in his cage. He whines and barks when I leave and it really kills me. But! Things are getting better as he isn't whining or barking when I leave for school as much. He isn't between my feet all the time either now. Last night was great too as the only whine he did was when I was going up the stairs when he was in his crate. Plan on letting him stay out for the night in the next couple days and see how he is.
We really need to work on showing him who's boss too. He is doing great but does not listen to me all the time. I know he needs time to get used to his new owner but he needs to learn. Walking on leash is good but he can get distracted and start to tug and pull.
Cade does have some dry skin though and I am putting a little olive oil in each serving of food (3 cups a day, 1.5 cups a serving - Blue Buffalo, Large Breed) to help. May have to take him to the vet to see if I can get anything to speed healing. It makes him very uncomfortable as he cannot sit still without scratching or gnawing himself. Also need to consult the vet to get his "manhood" taken away from him as sad as that sounds.
All and all, Cade is wonderful. Very smart, brave and loyal. Everything I have ever wanted in my doggy. Updates will soon come as he gets more used to everything.
Again, I'm all new to this so any tips or tricks would rally be great! Tips for separation anxiety, feeding guide and especially showing him that I am boss as I am having a couple issues there. Thanks so much and hope to talk to all in the future!
